Rajkot: Virender Sehwag decimated the Sri Lankan bowling attack, scoring 146 off 102 balls (17 fours and 6 sixes) as India scored their highest ever ODI total of 414/7 in 50 overs against Sri Lanka in the first one-dayer at Rajkot.
Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bowl first. And he was left to rue his decision as the opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar added 153 for the first wicket in just 19.2 overs before Sachin fell for 69 (63 balls). Skipper Dhoni came in and continued to smash the bowlers around, scoring a 53-ball 72 including 7 fours and 3 sixes.
But it was Sehwag who continued the destructive form that he had shown in the test series against Sri Lanka, where he was the Man of the Series. Sehwag reached his 12th ODI hundred off just 66 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 146 off 102 balls.
India ended their innings at 414 for 7, their highest ever ODI total, beating the 413 that they made against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup.
In reply, Sri Lanka also got off to a flying start. They were 71 for no loss after 9 overs, with Tillakaratne Dilshan batting at 45 off 35 balls and Upul Tharanga unbeaten on 22 off 18 balls.
Match summary: Sri Lanka 71 for no loss after 9 overs (Dilshan 45*, Tharanga 22*) needs another 344 runs against India 414 for 7 off 50 overs (Sehwag 146, Dhoni 72, Tendulkar 69)
