Melbourne: Former Australian umpire, Darrell Hair, has lashed out at Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who has been banned for two twenty20 matches for ball tampering during the fifth one-dayer against Australia at Perth, labelling him a “cheat” while also adding that he is pretty sure that the ban is not going to stop Afridi from “cheating” again in the future.
“Cheat is the only word for him,” Hair told the Daily Telegraph.”He has cheated before, he has cheated in this instance – he pleaded guilty – and I’m sure he will again. He is no angel. I remember that incident when he deliberately scratched the pitch when he thought everyone was looking the other way.”
Hair also added that besides his sensational debut when he made the fastest century in ODI cricket, Afridi hasn’t done anything in his career which is worth mentioning and that he is just an overrated cricketer.
“He thought he would get away with it. Unfortunately he’s become a highly overrated player as well. His first innings at international level was a great century but he has lived off that and never really lived up to it,” he said.
Former greats like Allan Border of Australia, Inzamam Ul Haq and Imran Khan of Pakistan, along with current Pakistan skipper Mohammed Yousuf, had also criticised Afridi for his ball biting act in Perth.
