Colombo: In what can only be called a knee-jerk reaction following their disastrous tour to India where they lost both the Test and the ODI series, Sri Lanka have dropped veteran batsman Sanath Jayasuriya from next month’s tri-series in Bangladesh featuring them, India and Bangladesh.
Jayasuriya, who is the world’s most experienced one-day player, was not named in the 15-man squad announced by Sri Lanka cricket on Wednesday for the series to be played in Dhaka from January 4-13.
The swashbuckling opener had recently completed 20 years in International cricket and has played 444 one-day matches scoring a staggering 11,825 runs.
Others to face the axe after the humiliating defeat in the ODI series against India were Chamara Kapugedara, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, all of whom had a tough time on the Indian tour.
Sri Lanka lost the three-Test series 2-0, drew the T20 series 1-1 and lost the five-match one-day series 1-3. Middle-order batsman Mahela Jayawardene, all-rounder Angelo Mathews, off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and speedster Dilhara Fernando were not considered for the 15-man squad to Bangladesh, having picked up injuries in India.
They were replaced by newcomer batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, Chamara Silva, legspinner Malinga Bandara and fast bowler Thilan Thushara.
Sri Lanka squad: Kumar Sangakkara (captain and wicket keeper), Tillakaratne Dilshan (vice-captain), Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Thilina Kandamby, Chamara Silva, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thissara Perera, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, Malinga Bandara, Suraj Randiv, Thilan Thushara, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Kulasekara and Chanaka Welagedera.
