Napier: Kiwi all-rounder Jacob Oram pulverised the Bangladesh bowlers, smashing 83 off just 40 balls to set up a comprehensive 146-runs win for New Zealand in the first of the three one-dayers against Bangladesh.

New Zealand were struggling at one stage, having lost 6 wickets with just 187 runs on the board before Jacob Oram just turned the game on its head during the batting Powerplay. At 232 for 6 off 43 overs, the Kiwis took the power play and scored 82 runs during the five-over period, losing just one wicket, elevating what would otherwise have been an average total, to a match-winning total of 336 for 9.

Oram made full use of some bad bowling during the death overs. He was eventually dismissed for 83 off 40 balls, including 8 fours and 5 huge sixes, but the damage had been done by then. Oram was ably supported by Neil Broom, who chipped in with a well-paced 71. Scoring heavily over long off and midwicket, Oram and Broom added 123 for the seventh wicket, a New Zealand record, off just 67 balls.

Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat first, Peter Ingram, in his first ODI, and Ross Taylor added a confident 98 after losing Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill to some excellent new ball bowling by Bangladesh. Both batsmen made half centuries but failed to convert their starts, holing out to men in the deep in quick succession. Ingram ended on 69 and Taylor was dismissed just after he reached his half century, for 51. Daniel Vettori also batted well for his 32 but was stumped off Shakib Al Hasan, leaving the hosts struggling at 187 for 6 before Broom and Oram came together for their explosive stand.

In reply, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes began confidently for Bangladesh, scoring at over a run a ball during the mandatory power play period. Tamim, on the back of a successful series against India, once again looked in fine form. He was especially impressive through the covers, threading drives through a packed infield. The partnership was broken with clever piece of bowling from debutant Andy McKay, as Kayes hit a slower bouncer straight to the keeper with the score at 71.

Mohammed Ashraful and Raqibul Hasan both failed to reach double figures but Tamim kept on going strong. He too, however, failed to convert his good start into a match-winning knock. His inexperience showed when he allowed the New Zealanders affect him mentally by getting caught up in a pointless psychological battle with the opposition captain. Vettori came out on top in the end, by having Tamim nick one to McCullum, ending his innings for a well made, but insufficient 62.

Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 190 off 43.5 overs. Vettori was the pick of the bowlers ending with figures of 3 for 33 while Oram, McKay and Guptill chipped in with two wickets each.

Match Summary:

New Zealand 336 for 9 (Oram 83, Broom 71, Ingram 69, Taylor 51) beat Bangladesh 190 (Tamim 62, Vettori 3 for 33) by 146 runs

Man of the Match: Jacob Oram
