Karachi: In what may be called retaliation to the Indian Premier League snub to Pakistani players, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has ruled out participation of Pakistani players in IPL 2010 by revoking the no-objection certificates (NOCs) given to Pakistani players.
“No Pakistani player will go to the IPL this time,” Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, told Cricinfo. “Why should we allow them to go? They didn’t pick any of the players and it was an insult to us. Why should we let one or two players go? We will not take this lying down.”
Butt’s statement came minutes after a PCB release had revoked the NOCs but hadn’t ruled out the possibility of participation of Pakistan players. “All NOCs issued to Pakistani players for their participation in IPL 3 stand revoked,” the PCB statement said. “In the future, if any player receives an invitation for participation in IPL events, PCB will decide the matter on a case-to-case basis after consulting the relevant government authorities.”
The decision comes in the aftermath of what happened at the IPL auction in Mumbai earlier this month. None of the 11 Pakistani players shortlisted for the auction were bought by any franchise, sparking a nationwide outrage in Pakistan.
Butt also told a news channel that Pakistan players may not participate in any of the future seasons of the IPL if Lalit Modi did not apologise. “We don’t think we will entertain their invitation in the next IPL. Tell them to apologise to us, our players, our country and we will welcome them. We don’t have a negative attitude,” remarked Butt.
The PCB chief also alleged Modi and company had conspired against the Pakistan players right from the start. “We have come to the conclusion that Lalit Modi did not want any Pakistan players right from the start,” Butt added.
