London: Kevin Pietersen made a comeback to the England team as he was named in England’s one-day and test squads for the tour of South Africa in November.
The star middle-order batsman is still recovering from a surgery on his Achilles tendon, which he underwent in July, and will have to prove his fitness before the one-day series begins in South Africa on November 20.
A lot of big names were missing from the squads including fast bowler Steven Harmison, who had said that he would quit international cricket if he missed out on this tour. But the more notable exclusions were Ravi Bopara, Owais Shah and Monty Panesar. All-rounder Paul Collingwood has been named in the squads despite currently being sidelined with a torn buttock muscle.
The test squad, which doesn’t feature Andrew Flintoff as he retired from test cricket after the Ashes, also has three uncapped players in Surrey’s Steven Davies, Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid and Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright.
Liam Plunkett also makes a comeback to the test squad while Sajid Mahmood will be making a comeback in the one-day team.
Test squad: Andrew Strauss (captain), Alastair Cook (vice-capt), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Steven Davies, Graham Onions, Kevin Pietersen, Liam Plunkett, Matt Prior, Adil Rashid, Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright.
One-day squad: Andrew Strauss (captain), James Anderson, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Joe Denly, Sajid Mahmood, Eoin Morgan, Graham Onions, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Adil Rashid, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright.
