Dunedin: Ross Taylor scored a 52-ball 78 as New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by five wickets in the second one-day international to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a modest total of 184 to win, New Zealand reached the target in 27.3 overs thanks to a blistering knock by Taylor who smashed six fours and five sixes in his 52-ball knock of 78.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and put Bangladesh into bat and the Kiwi bowlers didn’t disappoint their captain, restricting Bangladesh to a mere 183 for 8 in their 50 overs.
The New Zealand seamers ripped apart the Bangladesh top order, with the score reading 25 for 5 and then 46 for 6 at one stage before Mushfiqur Rahim and Naeem Islam combined to bring up a record seventh-wicket stand that gave the scoreline some respectability. Rahim scored a well composed 86 off 107 balls, including 8 fours and 3 sixes before he was trapped in front of the wickets by Butler. Naeem Islam gave him able support scoring 43 as the duo added 101 runs for the seventh wicket.
Despite Mushfiqur’s late surge however, the damage had been done by New Zealand in the first half of the innings, and 183 was always going to be challenging to defend on a track that seemed to be getting better for batting as the day wore on.
Bangladesh started well with the ball, sending back Brendan McCullum (9) quickly but a 29-ball 32 by Martin Guptill effectively ended any chances of a Bangladesh fightback. Ross Taylor and James Franklin then added 79 for the fourth wicket to take the Kiwis within touching distance of a win. Taylor was dismissed trying to go for another big hit off the bowling of Shafiul with the score on 179. Neil Broom came in and was dismissed on the first ball but skipper Daniel Vettori and James Franklin completed a comfortable win for the Black Caps.
Match Summary:
New Zealand 185 for 5 (Taylor 78, Guptill 32) beat Bangladesh 183 for 8 (Mushfiqur 86, Butler 3-43, McKay 2-17) by five wickets
