Dubai: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s number one spot in ODI batsmen rankings is under threat from his teammate and close friend Yuvraj Singh while the top ODI team’s spot is also up for grabs in the tri-series in Sri Lanka starting today.
India can be the No.1 ODI team at the end of the tournament provided they complete a clean sweep in the tournament and win all three matches which will include the final. In the batsmen rankings, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is ahead of the second-placed Yuvraj by 44 rating points and the order might change depending on who performs better in the series.
Besides Dhoni and Yuvraj, India have two more batsmen in the top 20. The champion, Sachin Tendulkar, is at the 12th position with a place in the top 10 well within his reach while opener Gautam Gambhir shares the 17th spot with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor.
In the team rankings, India is behind the first-placed South Africa by just 1 rating point but if it wins all the matches in the tournament, it will gain 2 rating points. However, if India loses one match in the tournament, it will stay on 126 ratings points while defeat in two matches will drop it to 123 ratings points.
Among other players featuring in the tournament, Kumar Sangakkara is the only Sri Lanka batsman inside the top 20, sitting just outside the top 10 at 11th position. Mahela Jayawardena is at the 30th position while Tillakeratne Dilshan is 32nd.
In the rankings for ODI bowlers, Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Kulasekara is in the race for the top spot with New Zealand’s duo of Kyle Mills and Daniel Vettori. With only 36 points separating Kulasekara from Vettori, a change at the top of the order looks inevitable. The 23rd placed Harbhajan Singh is the highest-ranked Indian bowler in the absence of 16th placed Zaheer Khan, who will not be playing in the tournament because of a shoulder surgery.
