Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings received a huge jolt on Wednesday with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni being ruled out of the Indian Premier League for 10 days after he picked up an injury in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. Suresh Raina has been named captain in Dhoni’s absence.
The Indian skipper, who anchored Chennai’s batting at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday and led them to a comprehensive win, was hit on the right elbow by a rising delivery from Kolkata speedster Shane Bond. And even though Chennai coach Stephen Fleming had hoped that he would be fine before their next game, the x-ray shows more than just a bruise. Dhoni’s elbow, in fact, was strapped with an ice pack at the time of the post-match presentation.
Chennai will next be going up against Delhi Daredevils at the Feroze Shah Kotla on Friday and Dhoni’s absence gives Delhi, which is already on a roll with two wins out of two games, a definite edge in the game. Suresh Raina, who has been scratchy with the bat in the first two games, will now have the additional responsibiliy of captaincy which may not help him in coming out of the lean patch that he going through.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel is expected to take the place of Dhoni in the team.
