IPL is better preparation for T20 WC than warm-up matches: Yusuf Pathan thumbnail

Kolkata: Explosive middle-order batsman, Yusuf Pathan, has echoed the sentiments of his India teammate Virender Sehwag, saying that the ongoing Indian Premier League is a better way to prepare for the forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies rather than playing warm-up matches against below-par teams.

“Everybody is playing in IPL. We are getting good practice. It’s a good opportunity for us that we are playing real matches. It’s (IPL) a big tournament and it’s a Twenty20 format, same as that of the T20 World Cup. You have the momentum,” he said, ahead of his side Rajasthan Royal’s IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders here on Saturday.

“There is a problem when you switch from 50 overs to T20 format. There you need some time to adjust. But here we are in the T20 mode. So it is giving us a good practice ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies,” he added.

Asked if a tournament like the IPL just ahead of the T20 World Cup wouldn’t lead to player burnout, Pathan said, “I don’t think there will be any burnout issue with us. We are playing 14 matches but not continuously. We are getting gaps to give ourselves rest in between. Even if you would not have played IPL, you would have gone for a 15-20 day camp. There also, you would have to work it hard on the ground,” he said.

Asked whether the bowlers have found his weakness, having seen him in two IPLs, he quipped, “If they took two IPLs to understand me then it’s their problem, not mine.”
