Brisbane: The much awaited Frank Worrell trophy between Australia and West Indies kicked off on Thursday with Australia taking the honours on the opening day of the first test, notching up 322 runs for the loss of 5 wickets at stumps on Day 1.

Australia’s charge was led by opener Simon Katich (92) who missed out on his ninth test hundred. Katich added 125 runs for the second wicket with skipper Ricky Ponting (55), after West Indies, being sent to field by Ricky Ponting who won the toss and elected to bat first, made an early breakthrough with Jerome Taylor trapping Shane Watson in front of the wickets, sending the opener back without scoring.

Ponting and Katich then consolidated the innings, putting together a fluent partnership of 125 runs before Ponting was dismissed by Kemar Roach caught by wicket-keeper Ramdin for 55. Michael Hussey came in and carried on the good work in the company of the well set Katich, adding 74 runs for the third wicket.

Katich was just 8 runs away from his 9th test century when Dwayne Bravo accounted for him. Katich chased a wide delivery outside the off stump and Ramdin picked up a diving catch behind the wickets. Katich’s innings of 92 came off 135 balls and included 13 boundaries and a six.

Hussey was then joined by vce-captain Michael Clarke and they continued to build the pressure on West Indies putting together a 53 run stand for the fourth wicket before Hussey was caught and bowled by Suliemann Benn for 66.

Clarke (41) then became the second victim of Dwayne Bravo when Chris Gayle held on to a spectacular catch at first slip to send Clarke packing.

Marcus North (42 not out) and Brad Haddin (9 not out) added 34 runs for the sixth wicket and were still at the crease at stumps on Day 1. For the West Indies, Bravo was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 2 for 66 while Jerome Taylor and Suliemann Benn picked up one wicket each.

West Indies, who are back to a full strength test team, are back under the leadership of Chris Gayle. A Barath and Ravi Rampual made their test debuts for the Carribeans.

Brief Scores:

Australia 322 for 5 (Katich 92, Hussey 61, Ponting 55, Bravo 2 for 66) vs. West Indies
