Durban: Alastair Cook scored a patient century as he and Paul Collingwood propelled England to a 43-run lead at the end of Day 3 of the second test against South Africa.

England’s opening batsman and vice-captain, Alastair Cook, scored 118 in a marathon innings during which he faced 263 balls and stayed at the crease for 401 minutes. Cook and Collingwood (91), who missed out on his 10th test hundred, added 142 runs for the fourth wicket as England ended day 3 at 386 for 5, a lead of 43 runs in the first innings.

Ian Bell, who came in at the dismissal of Paul Collingwood, scored a breezy half century and was unbeaten on 55 off 84 balls, including 5 fours and a six. Giving him company at the crease was Matt Prior, unbeaten on 11.

For South Africa, Morne Morkel was the pick of the bowlers, finishing the day with figures of 3 for 69.

For the first time in the match, there was a full day’s play under a cloudless sky, with 283 runs scored in 96.4 overs for the loss of four wickets.
