Johannesburg: After their seven-wicket loss to England in the second ODI, South Africa have recalled speedster Morne Morkel for the remainder of the ODI series in a bid to strengthen their bowling line-up.
The 25-year-old, who has picked up 31 wickets in 21 one-dayers, will join the squad on Wednesday ahead of the third game in the five-match series in Cape Town on Friday.
“He (Morkel) has shown good form in domestic cricket this season and was also impressive in the 50-over match for South Africa A against England a week ago,” Mike Procter, South Africa’s convener of selectors, said in a statement. “He will definitely form part of our plans for the test series as well, so the sooner we have him involved with the team the better.”
Morkel last played in one-day cricket for South Africa in April earlier this year when he took the field against Australia in Johannesburg. He has since then been out of contention owing to a string of mediocre performances.
England are currently leading the series 1-0 after the first match was washed out by rain.
