Durban: Graeme Swann picked up his second five-wicket haul in consecutive matches as England finished off the second test against South Africa in just 75 minutes on the fifth day. The tourists humiliated South Africa by an innings and 98 runs to wrap up the game and take a 1-0 lead in the four match series.
Graeme Swann was the hero for England once again, bagging his second consecutive Man of the Match award, as he ended with figures of 5 for 54 in the second innings and figures of 9 for 164 in the match. Stuart Broad was the other chief destroyer, finishing with figures of 4 for 43.
South Africa, resuming on their overnight score of 76 for 6, were always facing defeat. And it came sooner than they would have expected on the fifth morning of the game as the Proteas were bowled out for a paltry 133.
“It’s not far off the best performance I’ve seen by an England team,” said England captain Andrew Strauss, “but I’m aware the series is very much alive and there is still hard work to be done.”
Meanwhile, South African captain Graeme Smith admitted his side had been outplayed. “We’ve got to look at ourselves in the mirror and bounce back very quickly,” he said.
The two teams now move to Cape Town for the third test which starts on Sunday.
