Durban: Off-spinner Graeme Swann and fast-bowler Stuart Broad ripped through the South African top order to leave the hosts on the brink of an innings defeat on the fourth day of the second test against England.

Swann and Broad picked up three wickets each as they ran through the Proteas batting to leave the home team tottering at 76 for 6 in their second innings, still trailing England by 156 runs with one day left in the game.

Earlier, Ian Bell scored a splendid 141 to lead the charge for England as the tourists amassed a huge total of 575 for 9 declared, a lead of 232 runs in the first innings.

South Africa were in trouble right from the beginning as Swann removed both Ashwell Prince and Hashim Amla before tea. The famed middle order of Jacques Kallis, AB De Villiers and JP Duminy then fell in quick succession, all misjudging straight deliveries from Stuart Broad and watching their stumps being castled. Skipper Graeme Smith was then trapped in front of the wickets by Swann to leave the hosts struggling at 56 for 6.

A gritty seventh wicket stand between Mark Boucher (20 not out) and Morne Morkel (7 not out) ensured that the Proteas reached the close of play at 76 for 6.

Match Summary:

South Africa 343 (Kallis 75, Smith 75) and 76 for 6 (Boucher 20*, Morkel 7*) trail England 575 for 9 dec (Bell 141, Cook 118) by 156 runs
