Irfan Pathan not included in 30 probables for T20 World Cup thumbnail

Mumbai: All-rounder Irfan Pathan, who is suffering from a back injury, hasn’t found a place in the 30-member probables list announced for the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies from April 30.

Irfan led both the runs and wickets tally for Baroda in the Ranji Trophy this season, with 22 wickets at an average of 18.54 and 397 runs at 49.62 in five matches. But he missed Baroda’s matches in the Ranji Trophy one-dayers.

Young Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey, who became the first Indian to score a century in the IPL, and followed it up with a string of consistent scores in the Ranji, Duleep and Vijay Hazare Trophies, has been included in the probables. Pandey’s fast bowling teammate R Vinay Kumar is another new face named in India’s 30-member list.

Madhya Pradesh wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha, who also had a successful domestic season, was the other new face in the list announced by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan after a meeting of the selection committee.

Pandey, R Vinay Kumar and Ojha are the only players in the list who have never featured in Indian squad. Youngsters like Abhimanyu Mithun, Wriddhiman Saha, Sudeep Tyagi and Abhishek Nayar also found a place in the list.

Uttar Pradesh duo Rudra Pratap Singh and Piyush Chawla and speedster Munaf Patel, who have been off the selection radar for a long time, are also back in the reckoning.

The preliminary squad includes eight batsmen, four wicketkeepers, four allrounders, 10 fast bowlers and four spinners. The squad will be pruned further before the ICC stipulated deadline for announcing the final squads for the April 30-May 16 event to be held at three venues — Guyana, Barbados and St Lucia.
