Karachi: Pakistan’s national selection committee, being headed by its new chairman Mohsin Khan, will be meeting today to announce the 15-member squad for the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies later this year.
The selection committee has already named 30 probables and will be pruning down the list to 15 players after considering the performances in the ongoing National Twenty20 championship.
No big surprises are expected in the 15-member squad as the selectors have already omitted fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and experienced batsman Faisal Iqbal from the preliminary squad.
Interestingly, their omission comes at a time when Shoaib looked the fittest in years while playing one match in the national Twenyt20 tournament and Faisal has, in recent weeks, been on a scoring spree in this format of the game at the domestic level.
Both the players have said they are disappointed at their omissions from the preliminary squad and Shoaib made the point that in the past, the selectors had changed players in the preliminary squad after sending the list to the ICC, giving the example of Abdul Razzaq being drafted into the Pakistan team at the last moment in the last Twenty20 World Cup in England.
Pakistan are the defending champions in the T20 format of the game. They won the second edition of the T20 World Cup in England last year.
