Johannesburg: According to reports, the enigmatic South African batsman, Herschelle Gibbs, is contemplating retiring from international cricket after he was omitted from the one-day for the series against England, which the Proteas lost 2-1.
Afrikaans daily Beeld quoted an unnamed source close to Gibbs saying that the decision had “nothing to do with the fact that he has been omitted (from the national side) for the umpteenth time.”
“Although he still has to weigh up a few choices, Gibbs feels that he has had enough after such a long career,” the source was quoted as saying.
The source also said that Gibbs will continue playing for his Indian Premier League side, Deccan Chargers. Both Gibbs and his agent, Donne Commins, were unavailable for comment on the rumours. South African coach, Micky Arthur, too denied having knowledge of any such decision of Gibbs, saying that the star opener is very much a part of South Africa’s plans for the 2011 World Cup.
Gibbs, considered one of the best opening batsmen around the world, has had a controversial 13 year long career. He has been at the centre of controversies starting from match-fixing to substance abuse.
